LIFE of NC, Inc. (a.k.a. STRIVE) has been a proactive and engaging community asset since late 1999/early 2000. The organization and its leaders have worked diligently to address the concerns of community members. LIFE seek broad and diverse community partnerships to provide a well-rounded and thorough outreach approach to those in the traditional employment training tract and those in the re-entry tract. These partnerships have not only provided these individuals with the assistance necessary to foster individual growth and development.
Between 1999-1999, community members banded together – pushing for revitalization and support at a time where the crime rate in Greenville, NC was twice that of the national average1. During this same time, the state experienced a 43% recidivist arrest rate among a sample of ex-offenders studied in fiscal year 1998/1999 2. Community activists sought community-wide programmatic efforts that would address many, if not all, of the factors that were contributing to the levels of crimes experienced in the area – including employment training initiatives and reentry efforts to assist those re-entering the community from area detention centers. In response to this push in Eastern North Carolina, LIFE (Lifestyle Innovation for Empowerment) of NC, Inc. was incorporated as a 501 (c) 3 in 1999.
